What is Data Migration?

Data migration refers to the process of moving, transferring or shifting the data from one location to another. Working of Data Migration:

Data migration essentially works by moving the data from one storage location to another. This process involves three basic steps, which are as follows:

●       Planning: Planning refers to that phase of data migration in which you analyze the source, destination, and the actual data and devise the necessary requirements for the successful completion of data migration.

●       Migration: As the name implies, the migration refers to the actual implementation of the data migration process in which data is displaced from the source to the destination.

●       Post-Migration: Post-migration is the stage after the migration process and it involves the validation and verification of the migrated data. This step ensures that the migration process has been carried out successfully.

What are the Different Types of Data Migration?

The main types of data migration are listed below:

➢        Storage Migration: Storage migration refers to the process of changing the underlying storage medium on which your data resides.

➢        Database Migration: Database migration means shifting the data from one database to another. For example, you can migrate your data from SQL database to Oracle database.

➢        Application Migration: Application migration refers to the process of changing your application vendor or the platform on which it operates.

Data Migration vs Data Integration:

Many people often confuse data integration with data migration. To clear this ambiguity, we will state the definitions of both the processes. Data integration is the continuous combining of already existing data with the newly generated data whereas data migration means shifting a complete dataset from one location to another.

Challenges of Data Migration:

The major challenges of data migration are as follows:

●       An unplanned data migration can lead to data corruption and data loss.
