What is Computer Network Storage?

Introduction:

Today's topic is composed of the following three words: Computer, Network, and Storage. [1] Let us first look at these words separately and then join them all together to get a complete picture. A computer is a device, which is used to carry out certain arithmetical and logical operations automatically in order to ease the task of a human being. A network is defined as a group or a collection of people or things. Storage is a container or a place to store something such as data.

Now let us join these dots. A computer network is nothing but a group of multiple computers clustered together in order to increase the computational power associated with a single device whereas computer network storage is defined as a storage medium attached with a computer network to facilitate the storage requirements of the devices in this network.

In this article, we will discuss in detail about the computer network storage, the basic types of computer network storage, pros and cons of computer network storage and finally, we will talk a little about StarWind Storage Appliance.

Computer Network Storage- An Explanation:

Computer network storage is, in fact, a shared storage medium that is accessed by multiple computer systems present in a network. [2] [3] Shared storage is necessary for those organizations whose data is accessed by multiple different employees. Instead of a having, a separate copy of such type of data on every employee’s computer system, the computer systems are connected together in the form of a network and the data is placed on a central network storage that is accessible throughout the network. Computer network storage can mainly be divided into the following two types:

➢     Storage Area Network (SAN)

We will explain both these types one by one. Network Attached Storage (NAS) is a type of shared storage, which consists of several disks bundled together in an enclosure. It provides a file-level data transfer to serve multiple clients.[4] 

Storage Area Network (SAN) is a type of shared storage comprising of storage disks that are connected to the servers through SAN switches. It provides a block level data transfer to serve multiple clients.

Pros of Computer Network Storage:

The pros of computer network storage are as follows:

●       Provides an easier access to shared files

●       Storage space is efficiently utilized

●       Wastage of storage is eliminated by avoiding redundancy

Cons of Computer Network Storage:

The cons of computer network storage are as follows:

●       Data privacy cannot be guaranteed

●       If the network is down, computer network storage cannot be accessed by any computer system

●       Scalability is difficult to achieve
