Convergence vs HyperConvergence


With every passing day, new trends keep emerging in the world of IT and computer science. There was a time when you had to have separate storage, networking and computation components in order to carry out your regular business operations. Although these components worked perfectly well when they used to be independent, however, when it comes to their integration or interoperability, these components usually failed because of compatibility issues. What is Convergence?

The term hyperconvergence is basically composed of two words i.e. hyper and convergence. In order to understand the hyperconvergence terminology in a better way, we will look at the definitions of both the words separately and then join them together. It is already stated above that convergence is the process of integrating the networking, storage and computation components on a single node whereas the prefix hyper means taking anything to the next level. Therefore, hyperconvergence refers to a better and more flexible version of convergence.

How does a Converged Infrastructure Differ from a HyperConverged Infrastructure?

The converged infrastructure is hardware centered which means that all the necessary technology that is needed for the integration of different components must be incorporated in the hardware under use whereas hyperconverged infrastructure is totally software defined. In a converged infrastructure, the storage, networking and computation components work together but they can also be separated from each other in order to operate independently. However, the components of a hyperconverged infrastructure are so tightly coupled that they can just not be separated from each other. Moreover, you have to face vendor lock-ins while using a converged infrastructure since it is a hardware-driven approach but the hyperconverged infrastructure is much more flexible in this regard.
